Cooking for your four-footed friends

Tasty, healthy and varied – that’s how we like our own food. But when we’re feeding our pets, we mostly focus on speed – out of the tin, into the feed bowl, done. It can happen that your four-pawed friend abruptly decides to turn up its nose at what you’ve put in its bowl. Sometimes it seems your dog or cat waits under the table for treats to “fall” off your plate. But don’t do it! Resist those big pleading eyes and plaintive noises! If you want to do your pet a real favour then cook him or her something special using good ingredients from your fridge or freezer.

Try mince, chicken or rice – your pet will like things that you like too. So you could cook for your pet at the same time you’re cooking for yourself. But it’s really important to leave out all the flavourings that you commonly add for your own taste buds. This includes curry, paprika, chilli and salt. And remember that onions and garlic are absolute poison for dogs and cats. But don’t worry, your food will still taste delicious to your pet. Here are some tasty recipes:

Fish cakes

It’s not only cats that like fish, dogs do too. For fishcakes you need 500 gram firm white fish, filleted, a banana, a roll and a cup of milk. Soak the roll in the milk. Simmer the fish in a very little water until it can be easily flaked. Slice the banana into small pieces then put all the ingredients in a bowl and mix them thoroughly. Form into fish  cakes and brown them in oil.

Chicken and veg

Good for your cat! Chop 200 grams raw chicken and simmer it in very little water with about 10 grams vegetables (like broccoli). When the chicken is well-cooked put it in your pet’s bowl and break a fish oil capsule over it. The oil contains important omega 3 fatty acids, important for glossy fur and a healthy skin.

Mince cake

You don’t need to be a cookery expert to produce this taste treat for your dog! Mix 500 grams beef mince with 8 eggs and 1.5 cups oat flakes. Spread the mixture in a greased baking tin and bake at 180°C (160°C with fan) for 25 to 35 minutes. Voilà!

Butter fish

This is a quick and easy meal for your cat. You need some cooked rice and about 200 grams fish cooked in very little water. Mix them together, warm the mixture slightly if necessary and stir in a teaspoon of butter. Your cat will love it!
