Eating to combat stress – the right way to do it!

Let’s be clear from the start, we’re certainly not advising people to combat stress by binge eating. That would be detrimental in every way: on the one hand, you’re avoiding facing up to the real problems, on the other hand overeating, especially on sweets and cakes, creates even more problems in the long run. You don’t want to fall out of the stress trap into the obesity trap with a concurrent loss of quality and length of life. What most people don’t know is that the right nutrition can be a powerful weapon against stress and help tip the balance back towards a contented and balanced life. Some foods can truly be said to reduce stress!

Stress-busting foods

If you want to combat stress, it’s very important to make sure your body has all the nutrients it needs. This obviously means you need to make informed choices when it comes to the food you eat. In particular you need to make sure you’re getting enough of the right vitamins. Vitamins protect cells and help to ensure that you’re protected against fatigue caused by stress. It’s not difficult to make sure you get enough vitamins. Follow the familiar “Five a day” formula and you can be pretty sure of consuming enough vitamins. Eat five portions – enough to cover the palm of your hand – of fruit and vegetables spread over the day.

Another, probably less well-known, anti-stress substance is magnesium! This mineral has a calming effect and can be highly effective in stressful situations and periods of life when your stress levels are high. Magnesium works wonders if you suddenly feel overwrought, nervous or agitated. Foods that contain a lot of magnesium include sunflower seeds, maize, spinach and wholegrain products. If you think you might benefit from a course of magnesium supplement, fitness expert Simone Tatay recommends taking a magnesium citrate preparation. In its organic form, magnesium is also said to make you sleep more soundly.
