Systematic and forward-looking shopping is the basis for organised stock-keeping and, by extension, for a well run home.

By planning your shopping trips you will also save lots of money by reducing the amount of food past its use by date that you have to throw away. It is therefore advisable to go shopping with a list that you have written beforehand – and to stick to it. Before you head out to the shops you should first check what supplies you already have and then work out what is missing.

It is extremely helpful to have all your food stored in one place for this. Food which needs to be chilled belongs in the fridge and all your dry foods should be stored right next to the refrigerator in a spacious pull-out larder. Now you have to decide what you need and how much space is available for it. It’s best to plan what meals you are going to prepare in advance and add any missing ingredients to your shopping list right away. You should also work out whether you are going to have guests and whether you need any special foods which you would not ordinarily buy.

When building up a stock of food, you should never buy or store more than you will actually eat. Therefore it is also important to take note of best before dates when out shopping. Seasonal produce comes highly recommended too, as it will help you to save money by not having to buy expensive imported goods. And at the same time you will be helping the environment because food transported by plane leaves an enormous carbon footprint.
