Fourth kitchen zone, “Cooking”

 

Today, most cooking is done on modern ceramic-glass induction hobs, electric hobs or gas hobs. Hobs are available in various widths, 60 cm and up.

A wider hob of, say, 80 cm, gives the cook more options and enables him or her to use multiple rings or cooking zones at the same time, without the pans getting in each other’s way. You should plan for an extractor hood that matches your hob; it should ideally be a little larger than the hob and should be installed at a height higher than the user’s head.


The performance category of the extractor hood should be appropriate for the size of the room. Pull-out sections and drawers containing the utensils you will need to use on the hob should be located underneath the hob. It is important here that sufficient work and storage surfaces are provided to the left and right of the hob; 30 cm is recommended either side.


The oven should be installed in the immediate vicinity of the hob if at all possible, housed in a larder unit and mounted at a height tailored to the specific user; this will also make the most sense from an ergonomic point of view. The elevated position means the user will not have to bend unnecessarily and will have whatever is cooking inside the oven at eye level. The oven will also be out of reach of small children if installed in this way.
