Study: Softdrinks usually cheaper than water

Many people drink heavily sugary sodas without being aware of negative health effects such as overweight and diabetes.

Softdrinks are growing cheaper the world over

This trend is fuelled by the fact that soft drinks have become cheaper all over the world during the past 25 years. A study for the American Cancer Society, looked at data for the years 1990 to 2016. The scientists compared prices for soft drinks in 82 countries and how they developed over time. They found that the real prices for sweetened beverages have fallen in 56 countries. For Germany, prices have been dropping at less than one percent a year. In 26 countries, such as Chile, Hong Kong and Australia, soft drinks have become more expensive. However, when costs are compared with income, consumers only have to dig deeply into their pockets for soft drinks in three countries – Hong Kong, Papua New Guinea and Zimbabwe.

"In 2016, a person could buy 71 percent more sugary beverages than was possible with the same share of his income in 1990," says co-author Jeffrey Drope. In some developing countries, it is as high as 89 percent. "As a control, the scientists examined the cost of bottled water. Although prices have dropped in some countries, water is still more expensive than sugar-sweetened drinks."

The price of sugary softdrinks must go up

In the specialist journal "Preventing Chronic Disease", the scientists advocate political consequences. They are in favour of increasing prices for sugary beverages, for example, by means of a tax or by a levy on producers. If sugary beverages continue to become cheaper, people will drink more of them and the problem of overweight will only increase. The study results relate exclusively to cola, which is available worldwide and has the largest market share at almost 26 percent.
