The obvious question is whether or not you really need a large work surface in a modern kitchen.

 Second kitchen zone, “Dishwashing”

In the past, the sink was mainly used for washing up. But nowadays this task usually falls to the dishwasher and the sink is only used for that purpose now and again. Its main use now is in preparing food.

Meals are prepared on the right and left of the sink, and in the sink itself, since water is needed to prepare most dishes. A waste bin with separate compartments is also required and can usually be found as a pull-out unit directly underneath the sink. So when designing the sink area, you must always bear in mind that it is used for preparing food. The kitchen design industry offers lots of practical accessories in this regard, including various elements such as strainers and racks, which help to expand a small working area in a sensible way. A decent mixer tap with a rinse attachment, for example, is another good idea, maybe along with an integrated dispenser for washing up liquid. Pull-out sections for cleaning products could be another welcome addition to the sink area.

The dishwasher should be on the left or right of the sink, depending on the kitchen plan being used. It is recommended to install the dishwasher in an elevated position, as it will be easiest to use if it is mounted at a height tailored to the specific user; this will also make the most sense from an ergonomic point of view. The elevated dishwasher should not be installed too far from the sink; if the distance between the two is too great, a second connection to the water supply will be required.
The cleaned crockery, plates, cups, glasses, cutlery, etc. should be stored near to the dishwasher. A very practical solution would be to have the crockery cupboard right by the dishwasher.
